The Earth's atmosphere (or air) is a layer of gases surrounding the planet Earth that is retained by the Earth's gravity. It has a mass of about five quadrillion metric tons. Dry air contains roughly (by volume) 78.08% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases. Air also contains a variable amount of water vapor, on average around 1%. The atmosphere protects life on Earth by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation, warming the surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes between day and night. There is no definite boundary between the atmosphere and outer space. It slowly becomes thinner and fades into space. An altitude of 120 km (75 mi) marks the boundary where atmospheric effects become noticeable during atmospheric reentry. The Kármán line, at 100 km (62 mi), is also frequently regarded as the boundary between atmosphere and outer space. Three quarters of the atmosphere's mass is within 11 km (6.8 mi; 36,000 ft) of the surface. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Air" Is it ok to cover an air return vent with a picture if proper clearance is provided? Q. We would like to hide an ugly air return with a picture. To provide proper clearance for the air return we would like to mount two 2x4's at the top and bottom of the air return nailed through the drywall. The picture would then mount flat on the 2x4s providing either 1 1/2 " or 3 1/2" (depending which side of the the stud we use) of side access for the air to pass through. Is this ok? PS - The air return is very, very, very ugly. Asked by raychance - Mon Jan 21 12:51:43 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. I hear you on this one too - sooo ugly and in my house they are right where they shouldn't be sticking out like a sore thumb, I tried hiding them too, but get ready to dust off your picture every other day and your heating system won't run efficiently either. I finally just painted them the room color and I'm learning to just ignore them. Answered by TORI - Mon Jan 21 22:44:22 2008 What do the controls on my air conditioner unit do? Q. I have an air conditioner unit. It sits on the windowsill of my apartment. The maker appears to be a registered trademark named Simplicity. The unit has the two modes, air conditioner mode and fan mode. It seems to have a control for three speeds, high, medium and low. Then there is a control to make two blades glide back and forth. I should think those are to circulate the air inside the apartment here? These blades have a switch for close and open. The unit has what looks like a timer control, it is a button with a clock symbol. I guess that is so the air conditioner goes on and off at a specified hour. There are the important temperature controls. One control that has got me a little confused is a button with a picture of a… [cont.] Asked by parrotdaryl - Tue Jun 12 23:13:50 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Q. As compared to a bowling ball and a marble, how come the bowling ball hits the ground first due to air resistance? Doesn't air resistance slow and object down? Doesn't air resistance slow an object down? Asked by Ares - Tue Oct 21 19:29:48 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The bowling ball has more surface area and more air restistance. But the marble has more surface area and more air resistance per unit mass. This means the marble will fall slower. *** For example. Let's assume that the radius of a marble is 1/10th that of the bowling ball. Surface area = 4 pi r^2 Therefore the bowling ball will have 10^2 more surface area. But volume is = 4/3 pi r^3 The bowling ball will have 10^3 more volume and mass The air resistance per unit mass for the bowling ball will be: 10^2/10^3 = 1/10 So it will have 1/10 the air resistance. per unit weight.
